Creature from the Black Lagoon

Spell F-I-L-M, start the movie, find the girl, rescue her at the Snackbar, then build toward a multiplied Jackpot and Super Jackpot. Drive-in movie styling, a famous under-playfield hologram, and one of the great early-'90s multiball rule sets make Creature a classic.

The game at a glance

Spell FILM. Start the movie. Save the girl.

Creature from the Black Lagoon is built around a clear four-letter objective: complete F-I-L-M, lock a ball in either saucer to start 2-ball Multiball, search the three caves for the girl, then use the Snackbar to Rescue her, collect the Jackpot, and eventually collect a much larger Super Jackpot.

Why it works

The game gives casual players obvious targets — ramps, saucers, Snackbar — but rewards advanced players for controlling feeds, managing FILM efficiently, and building the playfield multiplier before the biggest multiball collects.

Signature personality

The drive-in theme is packed with period humor, including Move Your Car, a punching video mode, Snackbar gags, and the famous 3-D Creature hologram hidden beneath the center of the playfield.

How to play in five steps

Spell F-I-L-M.
Each FILM letter has its own task: F comes from completing K-I-S-S, I from opening the Snackbar, L from completing P-A-I-D, and M from collecting SLIDE at the right saucer.
Start 2-ball Multiball.
Once FILM is complete, shoot either the left saucer or right saucer to lock the ball and start the movie / Multiball.
Find the girl.
During Multiball, the left saucer, Snackbar, and right saucer are Search shots. Shoot them until the game announces that you found the Creature and the girl.
Rescue her, then collect the Jackpot.
After finding her, the Snackbar lights for Rescue. Shoot it once to Rescue her, then shoot the Snackbar again for the Jackpot.
Build multiplier and cash the Super Jackpot.
Shoot the left Creature Ramp during Multiball to send balls through the Whirlpool and spell CREATURE, raising the playfield multiplier. After the Jackpot, hit enough pop bumpers to light the Super Jackpot at the Snackbar.
Rules & scoring

What actually matters

Full rulesheet ↗

FILM & Multiball

  • F — K-I-S-S: complete KISS through the left-saucer lane / skill-shot progression.
  • I — Snackbar: light all four Menu Targets to open the Snackbar.
  • L — P-A-I-D: complete the upper-right rollover lanes; flipper buttons steer the lit lanes.
  • M — SLIDE: shoot the right saucer while SLIDE is lit.
  • Start Multiball: after FILM is complete, lock the ball in either saucer.
  • Search → Rescue → Jackpot → Super: the core 2-ball scoring sequence.

Big scoring

  • Playfield multiplier: during Multiball, use the left Creature Ramp / Whirlpool to spell CREATURE and raise the multiplier.
  • Jackpot: base value grows with bumper activity during the game and is multiplied by the active playfield multiplier.
  • Super Jackpot: worth twice the base Jackpot and also multiplied; collecting it doubles the base Jackpot for future cycles.
  • Move Your Car: repeated center shots start an 8M-to-3M hurry-up, followed by 2X, 3X, and 4X center-shot collects.
  • Right Ramp: progression normally lights Snack Attack, Video Mode, and later Super Scoring.
  • Unlimited Millions: one of the strongest non-multiball timed modes, making repeated left ramps increasingly valuable.
→
Multiball restart If you lose one ball before collecting a Jackpot, the Snackbar can light briefly for Multiball Restart. Make that shot quickly and the game resumes the Multiball state you had built.
Competitive play

Tournament tips

Multiball is the ceiling

  • Prioritize FILM efficiently. Most match-winning Creature scores come from meaningful Multiball progress rather than scattered side features.
  • Build playfield multiplier before cashing Super. CREATURE/Whirlpool progress can multiply Jackpot and Super Jackpot scoring dramatically.
  • Control one ball when possible. Cradling one ball makes Search, Rescue, Jackpot, and repeated left-ramp multiplier shots far more manageable.

Know the safer alternatives

  • Move Your Car is reliable value. Five center shots starts the first round, and a perfect sequence can be worth 80M.
  • Unlimited Millions can be huge. Repeated left ramps during the timed mode escalate quickly.
  • Eight right ramps is useful. That path gives you Snack Attack and then Video Mode progression.
  • Watch the pop-bumper exit. Tournament players often consider the bumper feed one of the most important setup-specific hazards on the game.
★
Simple tournament plan Spell FILM, get into Multiball, use the left ramp to build the playfield multiplier, then prioritize Rescue → Jackpot → bumper hits → Super Jackpot. If FILM is fighting you, Move Your Car and Unlimited Millions provide strong backup scoring.
