Nudging is not cheating. It’s steering.
If you’ve ever watched someone “save” a ball that looked doomed and thought, “uhh… is that allowed?” —
good news: nudging is part of pinball. Every machine has a built-in referee called tilt.
Your job is to make small, controlled moves that help the ball… without waking the tilt monster.
If you remember one thing:
The best nudges are tiny and early. Late nudges are usually just dramatic.
What nudging actually is
Nudging is a small bump that changes the ball’s path by changing the machine’s momentum under it.
You’re not “moving the ball with your hands.” You’re steering gravity and bounce.
Think: gentle shoulder tap, not furniture relocation.
The tilt system (the built-in referee)
Most games give you a warning or two. Push too hard and you get a warning. Push harder and the game tilts
(flippers go dead and you learn a valuable life lesson).
The 3 “save zones” beginners should know
Nudging works best in predictable moments. Here are the three easiest places to start:
1) Outlanes (the side drains)
When the ball is rolling toward an outlane, a small nudge can “bump” it toward the inlane or a post.
The key is doing it before it’s fully committed.
2) The “bounce off the slings” moment
Slingshots can fire the ball sideways into danger. A tiny nudge can soften the bounce and keep the ball from careening into an outlane.
3) Center drain (between the flippers)
A small nudge can shift the ball’s path just enough for a flipper to reach it.
Again: early. If the ball is already halfway past the flippers, it’s mostly prayers at that point.
3 beginner-safe moves (low risk, high reward)
Move #1: The “tap”
A tiny, quick bump with your hips/legs (not your arms) to influence a rolling ball.
This is the safest nudge style for beginners.
Move #2: The “early outlane bump”
When the ball is drifting toward an outlane, bump the machine toward the opposite side
to help the ball move inward.
Move #3: The “save the middle” nudge
When the ball is headed down the center, nudge lightly to one side to give a flipper a chance.
This is about changing the line by a tiny amount — not launching the cabinet into orbit.
Do this / not this
✅ Do this
• Nudge early, when the ball is still “saveable.”
• Use small, quick taps instead of big shoves.
• Nudge with your legs/hips so your hands stay ready to flip.
🚫 Not this
• Don’t wait until the ball is already draining and then do a dramatic cabinet suplex.
• Don’t shove repeatedly — that’s how you get warnings and tilt.
• Don’t nudge as your default “move.” Use it as a save, not a lifestyle.
Beginner shortcut:
If you’re going to nudge, do it small, do it once, and do it before the ball is doomed.
Mini-challenge: “One nudge per ball (max)”
This helps you learn timing without accidentally discovering tilt the hard way.
One Nudge Per Ball Challenge
For one game, allow yourself one nudge per ball — and only when it matters (outlane or center drain).
Your mission: nudge early, not hard. If you save it, you win. If you tilt… congrats, you found the limit.
